A downloadable project

Inspired by the Scratch films of Norman McLaren, Synchromy 2 invites a player to use the visual output of a video game as a synthesiser.

A pioneer of scratch filmmaking, McLaren would compose the soundtracks for his movies by directly defacing the film stock before running it through a projector. Here, a player will use a light sensitive pen against a CRT monitor to generate tones only possible with whatever image is displayed on the screen in that instant.

With someone else playing the game running on the screen, this image changes constantly, forming a soundtrack that is totally unique, and dependent on the exact way the game is being played. A collaboration between the player holding the instrument, and the player holding the controller.

(This project is a work in progress and the complexity and power of the synthesiser will continue to grow)
